From New Moon Book Club:
- Jazz feels as though she somehow doesn't measure up to her “do-gooder” mom, and her mom has decided that Jazz needs “space.” In what ways are Jazz and her mother alike? How are they different? Do you or people you know have relationships with their moms that are like Jazz's relationship with her mom?
- At the beginning of the summer, Jazz doesn't want to go to India , afraid of losing her relationship with her best friend Steve and reluctant to leave their business behind. How does Jazz's opinion change by the end of the book? Have you ever been afraid to do something new because you're scared to leave something else behind?
- Jazz feels self-conscious about being a tall, biracial girl in the United States . In India , she finds that she fits an Indian ideal of beauty. How does the culture we live in affect what we consider beautiful? How can we learn to feel beautiful no matter what culture we find ourselves in?
- Sometimes being far away from your usual, day-to-day life can make you realize new things about yourself. What do you think each of the characters, including those who stayed in the United States , learned from the summer Jazz's family spent in India ? How did each character change? How do you think these changes will affect their lives when they go back home?
