Coaching for Picture Book Writers

I offer a virtual consultation for picture book writers during which we will read your manuscript and try to get it market ready. Among other techniques and tools, I will offer input on characterization, dialogue, theme, word choice, the rule of three, page turns, and leaving room for the illustrator.

Sessions will take place via zoom. While you may keep the recording of our conversation I offer no written feedback before or after the session. For a 45-minute consult, I charge $300. Feel free to buddy up with another writer or two (max three) to share the session's cost and time as listening to a critique is also beneficial to your own work. My calendar fills up fast and I'm traveling a lot so book soon via email (info at steepedinstories dot com.)

I've offered this coaching through different organizations like the Andrea Brown Literary Agency's Big Sur Conference, Highlights Foundation, Hollins University, Antioch University, Whale Rock Workshops and others. Here are some responses from former mentees:

"I was so excited to work with Mitali. She's a legend! And so kind and positive. Obviously as a master creator she really helped us examine the hearts of our stories and touch base with the character’s wants and needs and how to bring that out."

"Mitali’s critiques were wonderfully thorough, supportive and thoughtful. She offered to make suggestions for cuts as she read our manuscripts, which was very helpful for me, as I always write long. She was warm, approachable, and friendly. Very inspiring!"

"Mitali was terrific. She had specific things she wanted to talk about in terms of critique, and she was open, encouraging, and friendly. She really shined in asking us to think about place in our stories and spent a lot of time working w/us on pacing. Her critiques came with a lot of actionable comments, and I will carry her tips forward. She honed in on really useful, long-term takeaways for us as a group and as individual writers."

"Mitali Perkins was enthusiastic, brilliant, kind, and so, so, so amazing at communicating to each of us how elements of story structure could strengthen our work. She really helped each of us dig into our stories to find ways to elevate it."
